Marfé Ferguson Delano: Hello, my name is Marfé Ferguson Delano. My first name, Marfé, is very unusual. People often ask me where it came from, whether it has any special meaning or whether it's French. The answer is that my parents made it up. They took M-A-R from Marie, which is my mother's name, and F-E from Ferguson, which is our family name. Somehow they put those five letters together and made Marfé.

Most people mispronounce my name upon first seeing it. I'm used to telling people how to pronounce it... and re-telling them. It's Marfé, which rhymes with parfait, that delicious dessert. One of my college friends still calls me Marfé Parfait.
