Kate Coombs: Hello. My name is Kate Coombs. I'll tell you a little story about how I got my nickname. First of all, when I was born, my aunt had already used the name Catherine for my cousin, spelling it C-A-T-H-E-R-I-N-E. So my parents spelled my full name, K-A-T-H-R-Y-N, to make it as different as possible. But then they were trying to think of a nickname, and for a while, I was Baby Kay because I had another aunt named Kay. It didn't quite fit though, so they were still thinking. Well, one night, my parents left me with a babysitter, and when they came home they heard the babysitter singing to me. It was a very old song, and it goes like this: K-k-k-Katie, b-b-beautiful Katie, you're the only g-g-girl that I adore. When the m-moon shines over the cowshed, I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.

And that was it, from then on, my parents called me Katie. In fact, I was such a nutty kid that they used to say, "There's only one Katie!" The awful day came when I ran into another little girl named Katie.

I burst into tears saying, "You told me there was only one Katie!"

I guess the very last bit of this story is that when I was 12, my father said, "Now that you're a little older, why don't you go by Kate instead?" So now I'm Kate, or as my dad used to say on my very best days, Kate the Great.
