My original name was Frances Manushkin, but I'd never liked that name because my mother would say Frances only when she was angry at me, like, "Frances, do your homework," or, "Frances, go to bed," so I decided to become Fran. Two of my brothers changed their name to Man when they were very young because they got very tired of spelling Manushkin over the phone, but I'm so used to it I enjoy it.
