André Machado Carrilho: Hi, my name is André Machado Carrilho, but I usually just go by André Carrilho, and I'm from Portugal. Per Portuguese tradition, a child takes a family name from the mother and another from the father. Machado is my mother's family name, and Carrilho is my father's. My mother is Portuguese, and my father is Mozambican, so my European African heritage is reflected in my name. Machado means ax, and some say that the name comes from a knight called Dom Mendo Muniz, who, in the Middle Ages, conquered the castle by taking down its doors with an ax. The name Carrilho comes from Spain, and it means mandible or cheek. I find that funny because I draw a lot of portraits. The name was introduced in Africa by the European colonizers and passed onto the local population. I was born a couple of months after the Carnation Revolution that ended 50 years of dictatorship in Portugal. André was a very uncommon name then, and my mother chose it because she felt free at last.
