Deva Fagan: Hello. My name is Deva Fagan. My first name was inspired by the Sanskrit word deva, which can refer to a number of different celestial beings in South Asian religions and mythologies. It was an unusual name when I was growing up, so I got called a lot of other things besides Deva: Dena, Eva, Divo... Or worse, people thought my name was Diva spelled D-I-V-A, which was originally a term for a famous opera singer, but nowadays is often used negatively to describe someone who is self-important and demanding, which means I often introduce myself in a similar fashion to one of my favorite literary heroines, as "Deva spelled with an 'e'."
