Graci Kim: My name is Graci Kim, and Graci actually is a funny way my dad spelled G-R-A-C-I of the name Grace. And my English name is legally Grace because my Korean name is Sung-Eun. Sung means holy and Eun means grace, so it's almost a direct translation, actually, that my name is Grace and it became Graci because my Dad just spelled it that way one day in a card and it stuck.

In terms of my last name, Kim. Now, I grew up feeling quite honestly embarrassed about my last name, Kim, because over ten million people in the world share the same last name and I thought it was very unoriginal.

Funny story, my husband and I, for our honeymoon, went to Korea, and he who after marrying me, decided to take Kim as part of his legal name as well, really wanted to visit the birthplace of our specific clan of Kim. So there are lots of Kims, but every Kim belongs to a specific clan of Kim or subsection of Kim.

Ours is Gyeongju Kim which is a place in Korea. We went there because we wanted to learn more about the origin of our specific clan of Kims. And there we found out that the Gyeongju Kims came about because there was a baby that was found by the king. The baby was in this golden casket hanging off the tree above a crowing rooster, and a golden light was emanating out of the casket. The king thought this was so cool, and so the king raised this boy as his own and named him Kim after the golden light that was coming from the basket because the word Kim actually means gold.

So I learned the story, and suddenly this name that I thought was quite unoriginal and a bit boring, suddenly felt so cool and so exciting because it came with this really rich mythology and history. So that's the origin of my name Graci Kim.
