Duchess Harris: My name is Duchess Harris, and I have gone by that name my whole life. The truth of the matter is my legal name is Miriam Harris. And in my family, I was the third Miriam. My grandmother is Miriam; my mother is Miriam. And I was named after my grandmother and so I'm Miriam as well. I come out of Southern culture that likes to give their children nicknames. And so when I was a baby, my family decided to call me Duchess. I did not know that my name was Miriam until I was being enrolled for kindergarten. When I realized that that was my name, I decided I didn't like it, and I refused to use it. And I can tell you, 45 years later, I still haven't used it.
