Junauda Petrus: My full name is Junauda Juanita Petrus-Nasah. My name Junauda comes from my father who's Crucian from the Virgin Islands, and he was a very eccentric experimental sort of spirit. I often like to tease that my parents were like these black hippies, very much in this Caribbean sense. And he gave me the name Junauda. And what he said that name means is it's a name that I will define in my lifetime since there's no other Junauda. It's a name that asserts that I am myself and that I'm nobody else. And that when people meet me, they have to acknowledge that element. And I think in a lot of ways, my defining my name has been a beautiful way to think about a legacy in life I want for myself.
So Junauda is my first name. Juanita is my middle name, which is pronounced in the Spanish way, and I think my dad named me Juanita as a honor to my grandfather who passed right before I was born, and his name is John. And Petrus is from my Crucian line. My father and my grandmother had the name Petrus. So in some ways it's patrilineal, but that it's my grandmother's name, I also find that it's... And not my grandfather's name. It's from my grandmother's side. And Nasah is the name I got married into. My wife, who's from Cameroon, her last name is Nasah. So, Junauda Juanita Petrus-Nasah, but you can call me Junauda.
