David Yoon: My full name is David Han Yoon. It's kind of weird because it amounts to having two names. Normal Korean names have a surname and then a two-syllable name. And I have a Western name, which is David, and then a Korean name, which is Han, which is not two syllables; it's just the one syllable. And then I have my surname, which is Yoon.

The reason my parents did this is because Han has three letters, Yoon has four letters, and three plus four equals seven, which is a lucky number in
America. And then David has five letters, plus Yoon is nine letters, which is a lucky number in Korea. And they did this with my brother too. They totally saw us as being kind of this East-West bridge of good fortune.

So as a consequence, whenever we go to Korea and people ask our names, say, "Yoon Han," and they're expecting an extra syllable, and they don't get
it because my parents didn't give me one.

And so it just sort of emphasizes that I'm a creature of both cultures, but existing in between them and not quite belonging to either one.

And so David means "beloved."
Han refers to the Han dynasty in China, which is sort of a golden age. And then Yoon, it's just an ancient word for "cow." So I don't know where that fits in, but that's my name.
