I'm also a scientist, so I use the name Darcie Ryan for my scientific publications. For my writing, I use the name Darcie Little Badger. Little Badger actually ... My original name is in the Lipan language. We don't normally say our names, but the English translation is fair game. And actually, what the badger refers to is, in our origin story, the animal that basically burrowed up to Earth from below where all things lived before we came here, was a badger. And badger was the one with the responsibility to return back and tell everyone, "Oh man, there's this wonderful world up here, y'all should check it out." A couple other animals had come up here before her, but they just fell in love with the world so deeply that they forgot to return. Badger was the one who actually returned. So when I say that, by the word Little, I'm not talking about Little as a person. People who know me would realize that yeah personality is anything but that. But I am, I guess, little for a god-like creature. So that's the origin of my name, there.
