Janie Havemeyer: Hello. My name is Janie Havemeyer.
When I was born, I was actually named after my mother. Her name is Eujanie, and that's what I was named as well. But as you can imagine, the main Eujanie, which is a French name, was very hard to pronounce, and I of course, had a very hard time saying it. What came out of my mouth instead of Eujanie was often Janie, and that's what people started to call me, Janie. When I grew up and started going to school, I remember being very nervous about how the teacher was going to say my name when she did the roll call because it would usually not come out right. It would come out as Eugene, Eugenia, and it was never Eujanie, which is really how my name is pronounced. So I started to work on having people call me Janie, and eventually that's really what most people called me that knew me well. And that is the name that stuck. And when I became an author and started writing books for children, I thought about whether I wanted to be called Eujanie Havemeyer or Janie Havemeyer on my books, and I decided to use the name Janie because it's much easier to say, even though legally, I am called Eujanie Havemeyer.
