Marcus Sedgwick: Hello, my name is Marcus Sedgwick. I found over the years that lots of people have problems saying my surname, Sedgwick. It's quite an unusual surname, even in Britain. I gather there are quite a lot of Sedgwicks in America, certainly one big family that I've read about. The thing to do with this name, like many names, is to break it down and say it a bit more slowly, because I'm quite a shy and nervous person, I often say my name too fast, and I found it's much better, particularly with the two Ss between the end of Marcus and the beginning of Sedgwick to say the whole thing a bit more slowly, but it's a name I'm proud of because my dad came from the north of England and having done a little bit of history into the name, I discovered that the name goes all the way back to the Viking days.
So, this is a thousand years ago or more. The name has changed, obviously a little bit over the years. It used to be originally something like Siggeswick. My old Norse is not what it could be, I'm sure. What the name means is the place of victory. That's quite a cool name to have, I think, a name which the Vikings brought over to Britain a thousand years ago or more.
