Lurline Wailana McGregor: Aloha. My name is Lurlene Wailana McGregor. Each of my names has a story behind it. Lurlene is what my parents decided to name their first daughter after they met on a passenger liner called the Lurlene, which sailed between Hawai'i and the west coast and was the only way to travel to the islands back in those days. My mother was visiting Hawai'i and my father was coming home from college. I came along almost 15 years later, after they got married and had three sons. McGregor is my family name. My great-grandfather came to Hawai'i from Scotland in the mid-1800s. He was a ship captain, and one stormy night he had to find shelter from the turbulent ocean. He found a small cove and pulled his ship into safety. This cove, on the island of Maui, is still known as McGregor's Landing. My Hawaiian name, Wailana, was given to me as a teenager. It literally means floating or calm water. As in all Hawaiian names, there are levels of hidden meaning.
