Book Description
for Red by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Seeger adds to her body of books devoted to single colors with a celebration of red. As with her earlier volumes, Green and Blue, there is a central wordless storyline. Here a young fox gets separated from its pack and wakes up alone. It wanders around lost, dodging the traffic on a country road, finally finding a farm where there might be food. Instead the fox ends up in a trap and is then freed by a girl who lives on the farm. The little fox walks and walks and eventually finds itself back with its mother. Each double-page spread has just two words of text, describing not only the variations in the colors of red but also the overall ambience and feelings the fox experiences: “brick red / autumn red / trick red / caged red / rage red / trust red”. Small die-cuts in the pages sometimes highlight a color, but more often they blend in with the picture, providing visual continuity from page to page. Seeger’s acrylic paintings have both depth and texture as they showcase the many shades of red and the emotional tenor of the story. (Ages 4-7)
