Book Descriptions
for While the Candles Burn by Barbara Diamond Goldin and Elaine Greenstein
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Rather than explaining how the holiday is observed, eight stories emphasize why Hanukkah is celebrated: miracles, traditions, religious commitment, peace, honoring women, charity, and rededication. The book begins with Goldin's brief general history of Hanukkah. Seven traditional, well-documented tales originate from Afghanistan, Israel, Eastern Europe, the Babylonian Talmud and Hebrew scripture. Goldin's original story coincides with the eighth day. Story illustrations appear on every page spread. The image of a menorah begins each chapter, and each menorah has an additional candle. The illustrations are monoprints overpainted with gouache. (Ages 8-11)

From the Publisher
Dedication, faith, religious freedom-these are just some of the concepts at the heart of the celebration of Hanukkah. Noted storyteller Barbara Diamond Goldin offers eight stories, original and traditional, that range over many countries and centuries to reflect the significance of the most widely observed Jewish holiday. In her vivid, eloquent, and occasionally lighthearted voice, she portrays timeless themes such as commitment, courage, lights, and miracles-and issues as contemporary as today's headlines: the role of women in Judaism, and peace between Arabs and Israelis.
