Book Descriptions
for A Strange Day by Iris Van Der Heide and Marijke ten Cate
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
One windy day, Jack is disappointed that he didn’t receive a letter from the judges of a drawing contest. He mutters and wanders through his neigh borhood, unaware that he has stopped a runaway baby carriage, rescued a bird’s egg, and saved a dog from a bicycle collision. Meanwhile, the detailed illustrations reveal a second story of the mailman courageously chasing the flyaway letter so he can deliver it to Jack. Clueless, Jack returns home to the good news that he has won and to a crowd gathered to honor him and his heroic deeds. Funny visuals reflect the Dutch setting. 2008 USBBY Outstand ing International Books List. mjw
